Blackberry Torch 9800 Review

When you first look at the Blackberry Torch 9800, you’ll see that it’s quite a large phone, and especially when the sliding QWERTY keyboard is extended, it’s much bigger than the iPhone 4 which it’s competing against. You’ll also find the Blackberry Torch 9800 heavier than the iPhone weighing in at 161g. So what could possibly cause people to want to buy this monster over the sleek design of the Apple?

Well Blackberry mobile phones have obviously decided that people still love a physical keyboard. In fact, many a Blackberry Torch 9800 review draws on the fact that you get the best of both worlds with the Torch. A touch screen and a keyboard. They have a point, because a lot of business users do actually prefer a keyboard, which can be quicker to type on than the fiddly touch screen keyboards.

The Blackberry Torch 9800 comes with a large memory of 4GB, a 5-megapixel camera and LED Flash, and a decent processor, so it’s no slouch. This is definitely a solid player in the business phone market, plus for fun it can sync with an iTunes library and is available in black.

HTC Desire Z A7272 Review

HTC Desire Z

A phone that lets you have it both ways

The HTC Desire Z gives you a dedicated QWERT keyboard as well as a super responsive touch screen. So you don’t get lost it comes with instant maps. And in case it gets lost, it comes with HTC Sense to help find it. Its screen is perfect for browsing the web or catching up on emails. Ideal for work, and play.
With HTC Desire Z you get both Touch screen and keypad. The 3.7 inch touch screen is perfect for browsing the web, checking your friends’ latest updates, or catching up on email. Pop open the keyboard — the keys are nicely spaced and raised for fast comfortable typing.

Design

Google has worked hard in the latest releases of Android to bolster the platform's appeal to business users, but with the jolly green robot as mascot this platform still tends to appeal to geeks and gamers more than to the BlackBerry set. The HTC Desire Z could change this, with an excellent QWERTY keyboard offering something we don't often see paired with Google's system.

Android is coming up on its third birthday as a commercial product, and yet a scan over the dozens of Android releases up to now reveals a severe shortage of physical keyboards. Motorola is far in front with 14 QWERTY Androids (only five of which have made it to Australia), but for HTC, a leader in the Android brigade, the Desire Z is only the second keyboard phone after the HTC Dream. To set this release apart, HTC's designers have attempted to solve a problem we see all too often with QWERTY slider handsets: how to move the screen into a position where it doesn't obstruct the top row of the keyboard.

The solution is rather clever: an ingenious design HTC calls the "Z-hinge". When you slide this phone open the screen is effectively lifted by the Z-hinge and placed in line, and very nearly flush, with the bottom half of the handset. This reveals an excellent chiclet-design keyboard, where each key has a little breathing room from its neighbour.

HTC's clever Z-hinge mid-action.

The physical aesthetics of the Desire Z are among the best of the HTC range. The handset maintains the now-familiar HTC design profile, but its mix of brushed aluminium and light slate-coloured soft-touch plastic gives the Z a brighter, more chic appearance than you get with either the Desire HD or with the HTC Windows Phone handsets.

User experience

If you've been watching the progress of HTC's Sense UI, then you're probably familiar with the user experience of the Desire Z. In many ways, it is identical to the version of Sense UI you get on the Desire HD. This Sense UI version 2.1 adds to its predecessor with customisation options unmatched by any other Android maker in the market to date. Using the HTC Hub you can change the phone's Skin, effectively change the colour palette of the phone across the UI, download ringtone packs to update all phone sounds in one action and apply any of the 72 HTC-designed home screen widgets.

Sense 2.1 also adds a multitasking manager into the Android notifications panel, allowing you to move between your most recently opened apps by scrolling through a horizontal list above your current notifications.

If there's one element of the UI we'd love HTC to take a crack at next, it's the layout of the Application Drawer. On the Desire Z the App Drawer remains the same as it has been since the first HTC releases, while other Android makers like Samsung have long since looked to an iPhone-esque horizontal app layout. This is a small issue to be sure, but we find the App Drawer can become a little unruly once you've downloaded several dozen new apps to the phone.

Media and the web

With innovations in the UI and the handset design, we weren't too surprised to see that the Desire Z doesn't break any new ground in either areas of multimedia or web browsing. The stock Android web browsing experience is used here, and our tests show it as being on par with the Desire HD, though a little slower with its lower processor clock speed.

We've read in several places that the Desire Z should support DivX and Xvid media files, but the only video file types we've managed to play on this handset are MP4 and WMV. We also struggled to use the HTC Connected Media DLNA file sharing app. In theory it should be as simple as having two DLNA-compatible devices on the same Wi-Fi network, but regardless of which devices we tried to connect to, the app simply couldn't find them.

The 5-megapixel camera on the Desire Z is only an average camera phone. Though it features an LED photolight and auto-focus, plus a range of nifty photo filters, the photos we took mostly showed soft focus and a gentle pink hue moving the pics away from a natural reproduction of colour.

The Low-cost Nokia C3 Review

nokia-c3-pink

The Nokia C3 is quite obviously a budget phone that is designed to put smart-phone technology into the hands of people who are comfortable with PAYG tariffs. Generally you can get this handset free with a cheap contract too, so from that point of view it’s good value for money. A Nokia C3 review however, shows this phone to come up short however if you’re expecting any good features despite the low price.

For starters the Nokia C3 is not a 3G mobile phone, so although you have a web browser built in as standard, you’ll be unlikely to make good use of it, as web browsing will be a slow and tedious experience. You do however get a mini QWERTY keyboard to facilitate text messaging to compensate.

For social media you have Twitter and Facebook built in, which is a nice addition, but again it will be a slow process without 3G. Nokia mobile phones have however included Wi-fi, so when you’re at home you should be able to log on without any problems. A top-mounted headphone jack will enable you to listen music using the built in media player. The Nokia C3 is a good budget handset basically, with a few good features.

Samsung Galaxy S i9000 Review

Samsung-Galaxy-S-i9000

The Samsung Galaxy S i9000 has been around for over a year now, but it’s still one of the best phones available on today’s market. Being an android phone, you have access to literally thousands of apps, many of which are free.

Even if you’ve never read a Samsung Galaxy S i9000 review, if you come across on of these little beauties you’ll quickly see what all the fuss is about. The first thing you’ll notice is the screen. It’s huge! It’s four-inches from corner to corner which makes it at least 25% bigger than the display on the iPhone 4. Samsung mobile phones have come out with some great phones since the release of the Samsung Galaxy S i9000, but this one still is one of the best, and hard to beat.

The Samsung Galaxy S i9000 specs include a super AMOLED display that is touch sensitive of course, and one that reflects 85% less light than most other phones making the display clear even in bright sunlight. With GPS, 16GB of memory, fantastic battery life, surround sound and a quick 1Gz processor, you really can’t go wrong here.

Alcatel OT-808 Review

Alcatel-OT-808

Alcatel mobile phones have obviously made the Alcatel OT-808 to appeal to the female half of the human race, as this handset is designed to fit snugly inside a handbag and look just like any other piece of makeup kit that resides there. You won’t see many footballers or builders walking around with this one. With it’s chunky pink design and reflective surface that allows you to check out that annoying pimple, there’s no getting away from this primarily feminine offering.

Unfortunately the features of this mobile phone are lacking majorly. If you want to browse the Internet for a new pair of shoes, it’s going to be a slow affair without 3G or Wi-Fi support. You do get a good-sized QWERTY keyboard however, so sending text messages won’t be a problem. An Alcatel OT-808 review however is let down by the user interface that isn’t at all intuitive, and the dated menu system leaves even the most tech-savvy person confused.

But really, the Alcatel OT-808 is more of a fashion statement than a serious phone. You can make calls, send texts, pretend to be on the Internet, and that’s about it, but at least you’ll look good doing it.

HTC Desire HD A9191 Review

HTC-Desire-HD-A9191

When you first see the HTC Desire HD A9191 you can’t help but notice it’s size. The simply huge 4.3-inch screen dominates the phone and looks great with a resolution of 480x800 pixels in 16-million colour. An 8-megapixel camera capable of taking videos in 720p HD resolution, hence the name of the phone, also compliments the display features. All in all, this makes for a great HTC Desire HD A9191 review.

HTC mobile phones are usually well connected, and this is no exception as the HTC Desire HD A9191 has quad-band GSM, along with dual-band 3G support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. So you should never be left wanting a signal unless you’re in a really remote spot. If you are, then the build in GPS will come to your rescue. The HTC Desire HD A9191 also has a fast 1GHz snapdragon processor that makes it fast and easy to use.

The only downsides are the lack of an AMOLED screen and no front facing camera for making video calls. The HTC Desire HD A9191 is also quite heavy at 164g. You’ll also find the large size difficult to hold comfortably if you have small hands.

Sony Ericsson Cedar J108a Review

sonyericsson-cedar-j108a

The Sony Ericsson Cedar J108a is part of the GreenHeart range of Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Sony Ericsson are trying to address the amount of phones that simply end up in landfill sites, and thus much of the internal workings and exterior packaging of the Sony Ericsson Cedar J108a is made up of mainly recycled material.

The phone itself is a good design, although some of the curves on the back make gripping the phone a little awkward, this is a minor point however as otherwise the phone looks great and makes for a good Sony Ericsson Cedar J108a review.

Sony Ericsson mobile phones have tried to make the widgets on the home screen intuitive and easy to use, and for the most part they have succeeded as they certainly save time. This particular model is mostly let down however by the poor camera that has no LED flash, which is unusual for phones in this price bracket. Although 3G and Bluetooth included, web browsing is a fiddly affair and cumbersome to use, as is the Twitter client, which is a shame because otherwise the positive features of this phone would certainly make it a winner.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Smart Phone

sonyericsson-x10

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is one of the first Sony Ericsson mobile phones to sport Android as it’s operating system, and with it’s large screen the phone certainly makes good use of the software. At first glance, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is a lovely looking phone with its shiny case and minimal buttons. It’s everything you would expect from a well-proven mobile phone company such as Sony Ericsson.

This phone packs in some good features, such as a great 8-megapixel camera, a quick 1Gz snapdragon processor, and a good media player capable of playing most formats. All of this makes for a good Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 review. There are a few things that let it down though, such as a poor method of text input, and a battery that doesn’t hold much juice. Sony Ericsson mobile phones have gone a long way to try and make this a phone you’ll want to own however. It has a premium feel to it, and there’s a 8GB microSD card bundled with the device so you can store photos, music and video. Price isn’t too bad; so all in all, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 isn’t a bad offering.
